The Ohio Department of Taxation has compiled a list of frequently asked questions covering many different categories.

What are the warning signs of income tax related identity theft?

Warning signs may include

  1. Receiving an unexpected notice from the Ohio Department of Taxation, IRS or another state income tax agency about your tax account. 
  2. More than one tax return was filed using your Social Security Number (SSN). You may be unaware you are a victim until you try to file your taxes and learn one already has been filed using your SSN.
  3. Receiving a notice or collection attempts regarding additional tax or a refund offset notice for a year which you did not file a tax return or have a filing requirement.
  4. Receiving a refund check much larger than you requested or if you have not filed your return yet.
