Ohio Has Different Look for State Checks
The State of Ohio has changed the way state-issued checks look, a change that many Ohio taxpayers first encountered when they received their refund checks in 2008 after filing their tax year 2007 returns. The revised check format initially appeared beginning July 1, 2007.
This revision was part of a larger plan to make state operations more efficient through implementation of the Ohio Administrative Knowledge System (OAKS), a change that also occurred in 2007. OAKS integrates data from the state’s human resources, accounting, purchasing and fixed asset management system.
An example of the revised check – commonly called a warrant – is at the bottom of this page. The illustrations show the front, back and remittance information (check stub) of the warrant.
Taxpayers are advised that It is no longer the legal responsibility of the Ohio Auditor’s office to issue warrants; this is now assigned to the Director of the Office of Budget and Management. As a result, the new warrants bear the name of the state agency making the payment and the signature of the director of the Office of Budget and Management rather than the Auditor of State. Also, note that the Warrant could be either 7.5 or 8.5 inches long as we are phasing out the use of the 7.5 inch version. Most information on the new warrant is the same as on the old, only it is in a different place.
